ABOUT

Christopher Atkinson BA (Hons), MA

Community/Landscape Archaeologist

I am a well-motivated self-employed consultant archaeologist specialising in landscape and community archaeology.

I have a range of heritage-related experiences in project management, supervision, community outreach and archaeological techniques, which includes landscape survey, geophysical survey, excavation, detailed recording and reporting, illustrations, aerial photography, LiDAR analysis and the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in particular QGIS, ArcGIS and MapInfo Professional.

I was recently employed part-time by the South Pennines Park (previously Pennine Prospects) as a Heritage Consultant, continuing my previous role with the organisation as Woodland Heritage Officer (2016-2021), where, as part of the Celebrating Our Woodland Heritage, I was tasked with formulating and leading a programme of community archaeology investigations and a programme of Forest Schools in the South Pennines. The project achieved: 37 archaeological woodland surveys; 5 community excavations; 4 QGIS Workshops; 1 Photogrammetry Workshop; 274 Forest Schools Workshops; 7 Forest School Training Events; and 1 three day Conference. The position also required a good working relationship with stakeholders and partners which included Yorkshire Water, United Utilities, National Trust, The Woodland Trust, Borough Councils, University of Bradford, University of Sheffield, University of York and Private Landowners.

As well as managing the organisations commitments to the MoorLife2020 Moors For The Future project, I have also been successful in establishing and continue to manage and lead a series of public-facing walks funded by Sports England (£10,000); as well as managing and leading a Natural England funded (£25,000) nature recovery project focussed on peatland and connecting people to nature.

Away for the South Pennines Park I have recently (2019-2022) been employed as a community and landscape archaeologist by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust as
part of their Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership in order to lead the community investigations of Wadsley and Loxley Common, Sheffield. This included leading not only an archaeological survey of the common, but also a community excavation in May 2022, and a geophysical and detailed survey of a suspected stone circle site in October 2022.

Having graduated (January 2015) with a Distinction from the University of Sheffield where I studied a part-time Masters in Landscape Archaeology, I am now undertaking a part-time PhD focused on investigating the charcoal industry of South and West Yorkshire. As well as furthering my academic credentials, I am utilising this opportunity
to widening my knowledge and increase my employability as an archaeobotanist with a specialism in wood charcoal and pollen analysis.

It is my passion to raise awareness to the public of the heritage that lies all around us. But more importantly, to empower communities, be it local heritage group, parish community, interested individuals or school and youth organisations to actively engage with their heritage lying beyond their door step. If you are interested in any of the services I have to offer, I would like to hear from you. I will provide you with an honest, personal service to suit your requirements at a reasonable, competitive rate with no hidden costs.

l look forward to hearing from you!
